چکیده

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has become an established therapeutic option for advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, the effects of unilateral and bilateral STN stimulation on spontaneous language production are explored, by comparing linguistic performance in different stimulation conditions with normative data of healthy subjects. Language samples of ten PD patients with DBS of the STN were obtained in four stimulation conditions: bilateral stimulation on, bilateral stimulation off, stimulation of the left STN only and stimulation of the right STN only. The spontaneous language production differed from the normative data in all four stimulation conditions. Especially morphosyntactic elements of spontaneous language production were altered. Despite these linguistic ax: þ32 9 332 49 71.

Subthalamic nucleus stimulation and spontaneous language production in Parkinson's disease: A double laterality problem.

BACKGROUND Asymmetric degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, are characteristic for Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite the lateralized representation of language, the correlation of asymmetric degeneration of nigrostriatal networks in PD with language performance has scarcely been examined. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS The laterality of dopamine depletion influences language deficits in PD and thus mod...

The Effects of Bilateral Subthalamic Nucleus Stimulation on Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Functions in Parkinson’s Disease: A Case-Control Study

Introduction: Parkinson’s disease is one of the most disabling diseases which by electrode implantation and stimulation of subthalamic nucleus (STN), much progress has been made in the treatment of drug resistant patient. This new method of neurosurgery may have some neuropsychological side effects on the patients. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of this kind of treatment ...

The effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients

Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...

Anatomical situation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) from midcommissural point (MCP) in Parkinson\'s disease patients underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS): an MRI targeting study

Abstract   Introduction: It is demonstrated that the degree of clinical improvement in   Parkinson's disease (PD) achieved by deep brain stimulation (DBS) is largely dependent   on the accuracy of lead placement. In addition, individual variability in the   situation of subthalamic nucleus (STN) is responsible for spatial inter-individual   fluctuations of the real patient's target.   Objecti...

The effects of subthalamic deep brain stimulation on metaphor comprehension and language abilities in Parkinson's disease.

The effects of subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) on different language abilities are still controversial and its impact on high-level language abilities such as metaphor comprehension has been overlooked. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of STN electrical stimulation on metaphor comprehension and language abilities such as lexic...
